How a personal “playground” became a market standard
Maciej Heba – Domain Lead International E-Commerce
When I talk about my work, one phrase always comes to mind: “Webshop is my playground.” That’s exactly what it is for me: a space where curiosity, creativity and analytical thinking come together. I joined bonprix in 2011 and have been part of the webshop’s evolution ever since.
My journey began in an unusual way: with a list. During my job interview, I shared concrete ideas about what I wanted to improve in the online shop. I saw a lot of potential back then and many opportunities to make changes that would have a real impact. That sense of possibility convinced me to join. Very early on, I realised the webshop offered a huge space to experiment, observe and learn on a scale large enough to clearly see results. It became my playground – a place where I could truly unleash my ideas.
From marketing to leading international e-commerce
My role has grown steadily. I moved from Marketing Specialist to Domain Lead International E-Commerce, working from Poland and leading a team of six bonprix colleagues and more than forty agency members. Over the years, I also took on responsibilities such as project coordinator and member of the Standardization Circle.
A milestone that I’m especially proud of happened recently: the decision to use the e-commerce platform we’ve developed over the last 14 years as the standard for all international bonprix countries. That moment meant a lot to me. It showed that long-term investment in customer-oriented processes truly pays off. I believe that my background in marketing and management, combined with my experience in IT and customer-centred process design, contributed meaningfully to this success.
Creating customer value and even market standards
A customer-first mindset is at the heart of everything I do. One example is the introduction of push notifications in the mobile app back in 2018. We didn’t think only in terms of sales. Instead, we asked: What do customers genuinely need? Seasonal offers, price alerts, updates about their orders, user generated content? We wanted to provide real added value – something that would support them, not overwhelm them. Looking back, many of these features ended up becoming market standards, which confirmed that we took the right approach.
Leading with trust and a touch of chaos
My leadership style is shaped by autonomy, trust and a controlled amount of chaos. I believe great ideas emerge when teams are free to self-organise, challenge existing processes and explore new paths. I like to leave a little space for chaos, just enough for interesting insights to surface. This mindset also helps me approach problems with a clear idea, discuss openly and choose the solution with the least negative impact.
bonprix webshops reached high accessibility ratings long before the Accessibility Act became mandatory in 2025. We also moved early on implementing modern cookie-banner standards, long before they became common in the market. These achievements reflect my drive to continuously improve things – especially aspects that make online shopping easier, fairer and more inclusive.
Driven by experimentation and improvement
For me, the webshop is a place to explore, test assumptions, define KPIs and translate ideas into action quickly. My philosophy is simple: try things out, make mistakes, keep the wheels turning. If something makes sense – just do it.
That mindset is part of my everyday life, too. Creating something new and better is a theme that runs through my every day’s life. At home, for example, I transformed a 100-years-old wooden wardrobe whose “user experience” was terrible into a storage unit for wine glasses and cups, complete with lighting and reflecting elements. Giving objects a new purpose and a modern touch is something I really enjoy.
Looking ahead, I want to strengthen the customer voice in how we prioritise features, improve cross-department collaboration and preserve the positive spirit that makes bonprix such a motivating place to work. The openness, creativity and support for new ideas are what I value most here.
